Mayor says new Walmart will boost Holly Springs economy

HOLLY SPRINGS — A Walmart Supercenter store is coming to Holly Springs in 2014, city officials announced.
The announcement was made over the weekend by the city of Holly Springs, which says construction will begin next spring at a 30-acre site on Holly Springs Parkway, just off exit 14 on Interstate 575.
The store’s opening is expected a year later.
“This is a very exciting announcement for our community,” said Mayor Tim Downing in a statement. “Not only will it bring badly-needed jobs, but it will help spur additional investment in nearby businesses.”
Walmart did not return requests for comments.
The new store is expected to provide the area with between 250 and 300 new jobs, according to the city. It will measure 180,000 square feet and have a fueling station.
The property is currently zoned general commercial, according to the city.
The site will also have 30,000 square feet of additional retail space for other businesses, the city said.
Now Holly Springs residents have to drive six miles to either Canton or Woodstock for the closest Walmart store.
City Manager Rob Logan said the new store will have its customary wide selection of general merchandise, along with “affordable food and consumable products.”
He said it will also offer consumers fresh fruits and vegetables, to-go meals, a bakery, deli, pharmacy and an expansive selection of health-related products.
“Walmart has been a fixture in Georgia for 30 years and is consistently recognized as a valued community partner,” Downing said.
“The store will provide residents with an affordable and convenient place to shop and will be widely popular. The timing for this project is perfectly timed and we are happy to welcome Walmart as our neighbor.”
