Gov. Deal proposes expanding full tuition coverage for certain work skills

January 13, 2016

Gov. Nathan Deal Tuesday proposed a slight expansion of the state’s technical college system program that provides full tuition coverage for students pursuing certain work skills.

If the General Assembly approves the governor’s plan, industrial maintenance would become the 12th area of study offering full tuition coverage to technical college students under the HOPE Grants program.

Deal launched an initiative targeting high-demand fields two years ago to encourage students to pursue careers in job sectors experiencing workforce shortages. The list of fields includes welding, health-care technology, information technology and commercial truck driving.

Deal’s remarks came during the annual Eggs and Issues breakfast sponsored by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.
