Local Color Studio: International Creativity Month Highlight

January 16, 2024

Cherokee County is home to a thriving community of creatives. This January, we’re celebrating International Creativity Month by highlighting some of Cherokee’s many creativity hubs. This week, we’re featuring Canton’s newest home for creatives, and North Atlanta Venture Mentoring Service (NAV) venture, Local Color Studio.

Local Color Studio opened its doors in Downtown Canton this past fall as a cowork art center, as well as a community art studio for all levels of creatives and artists. “We aim to provide space, time, instruction and support for all types of creative work through programming and the studio’s design,” said founder and owner Shanna Coulter. “We want to be a comfortable home for creativity, and the studio is being built around the artists.”

Reimagining the basement of a historic downtown department store, the space is the perfect hive for creativity of all mediums. Resident artists have 24/7 access to secure private studio space. Members of the 2D or ceramics studios can come and go as often as they like during open studio hours.

Non-member artists can also secure a walk-in day pass to access the open studio and various materials to create. Local Color Studio not only caters to visual art, but its content studio is fit for video, podcast, music and other audiovisual projects.

“Creating art takes time to set up and clean up, in addition to the time it takes to process and create,” said Coulter. “Because of this, many give up before they ever start. If an artist has a space that stays ready to work in, they are more likely to create when the inspiration strikes!”

If you’re looking to explore your own creative side, Local Color Studio offers a variety of classes and programming, aiming to be a home for all levels of creatives in the heart of downtown.

“For those who don’t create, the social aspect of gathering and experimenting can be appealing,” said Coulter. “We offer InebriART, which offers a guided activity, adult beverages and social interaction. For those who have no desire to create at all – we are always grateful for donations of art supplies, and we would love to see you on First Fridays when artists sell directly to the public!”
